Hidden Meanings from Beyonce’s Homecoming (and why they matter)

Hey White People.

I know you watched Beyoncé’s Homecoming, or maybe you were one of the blessed (read paid enough) few to be able to have attended Beychella (which is the name of Coachella 2018 henceforth and forevermore, Amen) and you might have felt confused about some of the moments in the performance

I am here to help you.

First thing you need to know going into this explanation:

Beychella was not about you, nor was it for you. I know, you feel entitled to every space where you set your foot. We, the rest of the world’s inhabitance have witnessed this tendency to try to occupy spaces that don’t belong to or were not intended for you from moments when you think it is ok for you to run your hands through our twist outs, braids, and locs without asking to the latest debate over whether Howard University, one of the most prestigious HBCU’s in the states, is indeed a dog park, to gentrification which is basically colonization 2.0.

I am here to let you know that none of the above is ok and that Beyoncé did not create this moment of cultural amazement for you. If you go into this thinking it’s about you, you will miss all of the nuance of the beauty that is Black Culture, specifically the Black…
